Preparing Your Clearwater Pool for Hurricane Season: Must-Know Tips

Hurricane season in Clearwater typically runs from June through November, bringing with it strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for power outages and flying debris. While most homeowners focus on boarding up windows and securing roofs, your backyard pool needs protection too.

At Legion Pools, we’ve helped countless Clearwater homeowners prepare their pools before and after storms. Here are our top expert tips to keep your pool, equipment, and property safe during Florida’s hurricane season.

1. Don’t Drain the Pool

It’s a common myth that draining your pool prevents flooding. In reality, keeping water in the pool helps weigh it down and prevents the shell from popping out of the ground due to rising groundwater.

Instead:

  • Lower the water level by just 1–2 feet to accommodate expected rainfall
  • Never drain your pool completely unless advised by a professional

2. Turn Off and Protect Electrical Equipment

Your pool pump, heater, and automation systems are vulnerable to lightning strikes and power surges.

Before a storm:

  • Shut off the circuit breaker to all pool equipment
  • Unplug and cover your pump, heater, and control systems with waterproof materials or remove them if feasible
  • Consider investing in surge protectors for sensitive electronics

3. Remove Pool Accessories and Furniture

Anything not secured can become a dangerous projectile in high winds.

Be sure to:

  • Remove and store pool toys, floats, umbrellas, grills, and patio furniture in a garage or shed
  • If you can’t bring items inside, submerge lightweight plastic furniture in the pool (not glass or metal)

4. Avoid Covering the Pool

You might think a pool cover will protect the water—but during a hurricane, it’s more likely to tear or blow away.

Instead of covering your pool:

  • Keep it uncovered and plan to clean it afterward
  • Make sure the surrounding deck is free of debris to reduce the mess

5. Balance the Water Chemistry Ahead of Time

Prepare your pool water with the right chemical balance to combat contamination from rain, debris, and possible storm runoff.

A day or two before the storm:

  • Shock the pool with extra chlorine
  • Adjust pH, alkalinity, and calcium levels
  • Add an algaecide for extra protection

This will help keep the water clear and safe even if you can’t clean it immediately after the storm.

6. Secure the Pool Screen or Enclosure

If you have a screened-in lanai or pool cage, check for loose panels and reinforce where possible.

Tip: Keep the doors latched and consider removing a few screen panels on the side opposite prevailing winds to reduce pressure and minimize structural damage.

7. Plan for Post-Storm Clean-Up

Once the storm passes, your pool will likely need attention:

  • Skim and remove debris immediately
  • Recheck chemical levels and shock the pool again if necessary
  • Inspect equipment for damage before restarting anything
  • If in doubt, schedule a professional inspection
